AppSummary
Auto-discover Application and Server Performance
A recent study of network professionals found 75% of respondents do not have adequate knowledge of the applications on the network. Identifying a problem is much harder when you do not know what you are looking for.
Instead of guessing what might be on your network, Select AppSummary alleviates this burden by automatically detecting applications – including custom applications – across every site. By tracking two-week running averages network managers can easily identify when usage exceeds normal parameters. Extensive monitoring of server connect times and server response times enables you to optimize application performance - keeping you in control of your infrastructure.
Select AppSummary notifies you when a new, unknown, or rogue application hits the network. A web-based, graphical interface provides visibility into the individual application usage over the past 14 days as well as notification when usage exceeds traditional baselines.
Identify Server-related issues Quickly
The source of performance issues can make the difference between a small inconvenience and a major business risk, such as lost productivity, lost revenue or even customer churn. Select AppSummary collects and measures performance of individual servers for server connect time and server response time, letting you quickly determine if poor performance is caused by network issues or server problems. Consequently, you can dramatically reduce troubleshooting and resolution time.
AppFlows
Obtain a Detailed View of Individual Application Flows
Select AppFlows provides detailed end-to-end visibility of individual application flows from every location in your infrastructure to help you better understand client-to-server, server-to-server or peer-to-peer relationships. It also bridges the gap between network and application monitoring by measuring individual application server connect and server response times. Combined with other Visual UpTime Select modules, you can quickly isolate problems by drilling down and determining if poor performance is server, application or network related.
Now you can quickly isolate if a user is authorized and if the application is mission-critical, recreational or unknown/rogue. With this information, you can determine if you need additional resources or if you should “shut off” a particular user or application to ensure resources are being used appropriately.
Manage Complexity of Distributed Applications
Enterprises no longer have business-critical applications and servers hosted at single headquarters or a data center location. Applications including Voice over IP (VolP) and Web services require a distributed architecture - meaning they are sourced at many locations throughout your infrastructure. Instead of watching a single host location, IT managers are now forced to manage across many locations. Select AppFlows provides the critical visibility needed to properly monitor, manage and troubleshoot individual performance issues across every location in your infrastructure.
Back-in-Time
Easy Isolate Troubling Intermittent Problems
Resolving intermittent problems is a major undertaking due to the fact that end-users don’t know where or when they will strike next. Rogue applications, bandwidth hogs, virus attacks and traffic bursts can resurface at any time. Select Back-in-Time resolves these problems quickly and easily by providing you a complete historical troubleshooting tool. It automatically tracks performance from Layers 1-7 and stores the information for two weeks in a short-term database.
With Select Back-in-Time, you can easily scroll back over time and identify causes and effects of specific performance issues – all in an easy to use, graphical interface. All of this rich data is then rolled into a long-term database with access to over 100 standard reports.
Achieve End-to-end Service Level Measurements
The vast majority of SLAs today provide only a fraction of needed performance parameters. Visual UpTime Select extends SLA visibility all the way to the service boundaries at each enterprise location – up to and including the intelligent device. You have an up-to-the-minute view of critical SLA parameters, including latency, availability and delivery ratio for frame relay, ATM and IP connections, so you no longer have to wait for monthly SLA reports to discover commitments were not met. Now you can take proactive action before user service levels are affected, not after.
Class of Service
Identify Misconfigured or Unknown Applications
With CoS, the enterprise selects the priority each applications receives, However, if this prioritization is improperly set, the network will not recognize the class and will forward the traffic at the lowest level of priority. Select Class-of-Service highlights these incorrectly configured settings or applications not prioritized by displaying an “Unknown” category. This capability helps you quickly locate the improper setting and improve application performance. In addition, you can see how much bandwidth applications such as voice, video, web, FTP and streaming are using for each class.
Manage MPLS-based/Private IP Networks
When rolling out an MPLS-based /Private IP Network, you must be able to prioritize individual applications with distinctive Class-of-Service (CoS) settings. For example, VolP is extremely delay sensitive, so it receives the highest priority. On the other hand, e-mail or HTTP traffic is less critical, so it receives much lower priority. Select Class-of-Service helps you manage and fine-tune application performance as well as validate SLAs for each traffic class.
Avoid Exceeding Critical Threshold Parameters
With private IP services; the service provider designates an amount of bandwidth or a threshold for each CoS setting. If the network becomes congested, or if utilization of any CoS goes above its threshold, prioritized traffic may be “policed” to best effort or may be discarded. Mission-critical or time-sensitive traffic may go from the highest to the lowest prioritization or even be discarded.
Select Class-of-Service lets you see the traffic in each class – and track utilization of all classes above and below threshold levels. Such timely data helps you fine-tune your CoS settings to assure the most important traffic gets the highest priority. You also can minimize the risk of exceeding thresholds and receive SLA measurements for each class setting.
Network Troubleshooting
Real-time Monitoring for layers 1-7
Managing mission-critical applications across the infrastructure is a major challenge. Select Network Troubleshooting provides detailed real-time monitoring and management visibility from the physical layer up to the application layer. With these views, you can quickly isolate and troubleshoot issues ranging form poor local loop conditions to over-utilized ports to top talkers and applications across an end-to-end virtual circuit.
Identify, Sectionalize and Solve Performance Problems
When performance degrades or outages occur, rapid identification and sectionalization of problem areas are critical, Select Network Troubleshooting provides a series of features that enables you to quickly identify and sectionalize problems across the network. Visual UpTime Select sectionalizes faults rapidly – so you can call the right vendor the first time and avoid costly downtime due to finger pointing between service providers and equipment vendors.
Traffic Capture
Benefit from Protocol Analyzer Functionality at Every Site
Many enterprises have a handful of protocol analyzers for detailed visibility when troubleshooting a problem. However, most do not typically have one at every site in the infrastructure due to resource and cost issues.
Select Traffic Capture gives you a full-function protocol analyzer at every location in your network. Trace, filter and decode the most common network protocols and gain in-depth visibility into subtle problems, such as protocol violations, incorrect configurations and timeouts.
Obtain the Detailed Information You Need
Select Traffic Capture decodes all seven layers of the protocol stack by exploding the protocol headers but skipping the packet payload to enhance security. Each protocol header is broken out with “plain English” decodes of traffic flows, Select Traffic Capture supports more than 85 of the most common protocol.
Service Summary
Assess Network Health in a Single Consolidated View
Knowing the operational state of ports and circuits is critically important. With Select Service Summary, determining the health of your network is just a click away. Performance information for each network is rolled up and presented in performance errors, warnings of impending service-affecting problems and overall health.
Customize views are available to meet your key needs and concerns. You can get right to the problem at hand by navigating the expandable tree that depicts an entire network.
Set Customizable Thresholds
Studies have shown that most major degradation is caused by an escalation of an issue over time versus a single occurrence. For example, a new application may be using 5% more bandwidth each month. That figure is low enough to not gain a lot of attention, but after a few months, this slow creeping growth impacts the entire enterprise. With customizable thresholds, you can determine what level of utilization of a circuit or individual application is normal. You can receive an alarm when that threshold is exceeded.
VolP Planner
Active testing via synthetic call generation
By generating actual VolP calls, VolP Planner actively evaluates network readiness for VolP. With test calls traversing the network, users can see how VolP traffic would interact with existing data applications. While the test calls do not go through a live VolP gateway, the testing environment provides and objective analysis of performance. VolP Planner works independently of your VolP system, letting users assess network readiness without having to purchase and deploy VolP equipment in advance or having to troubleshoot performance for an existing deployment.
By measuring performance on a per-call basis, VolP managers can now baseline and compare voice call quality pre and post-deployment. The synthetic calls behave like real VolP calls and VolP Planner provides Mean Opinion Score (MOS) as well as R-factor measurements.
Troubleshoot, isolate performance impacts
VolP Planner, an Ethernet-based appliance is a component of the Visual UpTime Select solution family, which allows enterprises to monitor, isolate and troubleshoot performance issues across the LAN and the WAN. For most enterprises that have deployed VolP, it is not sufficient to just know a voice call is poor, but rather it is critical to isolate what is causing the problem and resolve it quickly. Application performance can be negatively impacted by criteria such as latency, the local loop, port usage, misconfigured Class of Service settings or the application server itself. Visual UpTime Select monitors all traffic flow and measures performance across Layers 1-7.
Once you pinpoint the issue impacting VolP or data application performance, you can drill down and solve the matter, thereby reducing mean time to repair and enhancing end-users quality of experience.
LAN Visibility
Monitor performance of a LAN
For enterprises that are concerned with traffic on the LAN that may not go across the WAN, the LAN Visibility option with Visual UpTime Select meets the need. The solution will monitor all flows to and from the device and provide critical details like utilization, server connect time and server response time.
Troubleshoot and monitor n-tier applications
Many applications today are n-tiered, typically meaning a front-end server receives information from one to several different servers to process a transaction. With an n-tiered architecture, it becomes critical to have visibility of both the performance of the front-end server as well as all of the other servers supplying critical components of the application. The LAN Visibility option, an Ethernet-based ASE solution, has the flexibility to sit at multiple points in the infrastructure so it can provide the critical information for each enterprise.
IP SLA Routing Polling
Poll IP SLA Statistics from the infrastructure
For enterprises who want to leverage their infrastructure of Cisco routers, the Router SLA Polling module allows targeted support for the use of a router to report into Visual UpTime Select by collecting IP SLA data from the routers.
Fluke Networks’ Router SLA Polling module is specifically designed to collect and report on Cisco SAA data to verify service level agreements (SLAs) performance without the use of an ASE. By developing a software-only option, Visual has enhanced the Visual UpTime Select platform to enable another low cost and easily deployed method for SLA monitoring and validation.
The Router SLA Polling module collects metrics from the UPD-Jitter test included in the Cisco IOS SAA RTTMON MIB to provide Round Trip Delay. Packet Loss, Availability, and Jitter statistics. These statistics are presented in a report format through the standard Visual UpTime Select Web User interface, and can be viewed as monthly, weekly, or daily reports. Details on the SAA configuration for each router polled are also tracked and used as annotations in the SAA SLA reports.
